“The Cucamonga Valley is probably the California wine region you’re least likely to have heard about. A recognized AVA (American Viticultural Area) since 1995, grapegrowing here in San Bernrdino County east of Los Angeles, dates back to the 19th Century. Cucamonga is said to have included 45,000 vineyard acres in 1940. Post-war sprawl of the greater LA area inevitably encroached on agriculture. Only about 1,000 acres remain today, but the area’s still capable of growing great winegrapes (The Sonoma-based Zinfandel specialist Carol Shelton travels all the way to the Cucamonga Valley to source grapes for her Monga Zin).

“Galleano and Fillipi are wineries with long history in the area and both produce very good Zinfandel. This week’s Pick has garnered critical acclaim. The Pioneers Legendary Zinfandel is one of several different Zin bottlings from Galleano. It’s full of that traditional personality of this varietal. Spicy flavors of both red and black berries predominate, with some of the characteristic Zin quality some call ‘briary.’ We think it’s a bargain at $17.50.”

Food Affinity: “Italian dishes with red sauces or a big chunk of beef grilled on the barbecue.”
