Francis Coppola

California

“Francis Ford Coppola enjoys a substantial reputation in the world of wine, as well as for his film directing. His products range from wines like today’s relatively modestly-priced Zin to some very high-end Cabernet-based wines of the reborn Inglenook label. This week's 2014 Diamond Collection Red Label Zinfandel contains 25% Petite Sirah, a component of many wines labeled 'Zinfandel.' Though the label indicates the most generic ‘California’ appellation, the grapes have been sourced from two growing regions renown for the quality of their Zin—Paso Robles and Sonma County.

“In an era when some sweetish, high-alcohol ‘fruit bombs’ have perverted the traditional personality of this most traditional of California grapes, it is refreshing to encounter throwbacks to the style of an earlier time. One of our staff called the 2014 Red Label Zin ‘soft’ and said that it goes down easy, which is not damning with faint praise. Thoug not in a bold style, this Coppola wne still demonstrates some of that Zin character we look for. We found aspects of plum and blackberry and some subtle spiciness, perhaps contributed by a year’s oak ageing. This is a wine made to complement food, but not dominate a meal.”

Food Affinity: “Versatile. Would be appropriate with the onions and tomatoes of southern Italian cooking, as well as with a grilled steak and a baked potato.”
