2013 Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon

J.Lohr

Paso Robles

Alcohol: 14.5%

Suggested Retail: $35

“This is a higher tier Cabernet from J.Lohr Winery. Their basic Cab is good, but this is excellent and fair value at $35. There’s just a little Merlot (3%) and a smidgen of Petit Verdot (1%) in the blend. Both these grapes are often found in Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines from Bordeaux, and their presence buoys the flavor of this wine from San Luis Obispo County, as well as adding some complexity.

“The Hilltop Cabernet from Lohr is a big wine. It’s powerful and might surprise fans of more expensive Cabs from Napa and Sonoma. Dark plum flavors predominate, but there are other aspects, including a tobacco-like quality and some cocoa or powdered chocolate in the finish.”

Food Affinity: “Deserves to accompany a main course that is flavorful and substantial. How about serving with a Porterhouse steak that has been rubbed with coarsely-ground black pepper and garlic salt, then grilled to medium-rare over mesquite charcoal?”
