Henry Weinhards Private Res bottle PicmonkeyHenry Weinhard’s Private Reserve

Henry Weinhard Brewing Co

Milwaukee, Wisc.

Style: American Lager

Alcohol: 4.8%

IBUs: 15

Serving Style: 12-ounce bottles

Availability: Widely-distributed throughout the U.S.

Appearance:   “Light gold color. Fluffy white head that doesn’t last too long.”

Aroma:   “Some malt and hops actually come through. More beer nose than I’d have expected.”

Taste:   “Nice carbonation gives it a sprightly opening. There’s some lemony flavor up front and it finishes cleanly. Not exciting, maybe, but not bad. Actually, much better than I expected.”

Food Affinity:   “Little Mexican street tacos with salsa and freshly-squeezed limes. Ceviche. New England-style clam chowder.”

--Guest reviewer Sam Maldanado wondered about the provenance of a beer whose label said it was a “Northwest-Style Lager,” yet hailed from Milwaukee. However, that same label also declared that the beer was “Brewed with Cascade Hops from the 44th Parallel.” All in all, he thought it was pretty good brew and priced right.

Session Export Picmonkey

Session Export

Full Sail Brewing Co.

 Hood River, Oregon

 Style: Dortmunder Export Lager

 Alcohol: 5.8%

 IBUs: 28

Serving Style: 11-ounce bottles and kegs (our sample from bottle)

Availability: Good distribution in the Pacific Northwest and in California. This is a seasonal product within Full Sail’s Session series, which rotates styles of “sessionable”  or easy-drinking beers several times per year.

Appearance:   “Deep golden color with big white head, which dissipates fairly quickly.

Aroma:   “Hoppiness with a little spice.”

Taste:   “Rich and malty. Fills the mouth—has a plush feel. Lovely balance of hops and malt with a clean, fairly long finish.”

Food Affinity: “Dortmund brings German cuisine to mind. We think the malt in this beer would be a nice offset to the sharpness of the beef dish sauerbraten. Cheeses with caraway seed. Roast pork or weisswurst or bratwurst served with whole-grain mustard. On the other hand, a couple of bottles with just a bag of in-the-shell peanuts could be part of a pleasant afternoon watching an early-season baseball game.”

--our anonymous reviewer worked in a German restaurant in his youth and looks forward to drinking beer at Giants spring training games one day.

Sierra Nevada Nooner Picmonkey

Nooner

Sierra Nevada Brewing

Chico, California

Style: Pilsner

Alcohol: 5.2%

IBUs: 38

Serving Style: kegs, 12-ounce bottles and cans

Availability: Year around nationally

Appearance:   “Bright golden color with good off-white head.”

Aroma:   “Some spicy and floral hoppiness, but not overpowering.”

Taste:   “Fine balance of malt and hops in a brew that does appropriate homage to Czech and Bavarian pilsners.  Finishes slightly bitter, but clean and dry. Goes down easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s insufficient."

Food Affinity:   “Grilled cheese sandwiches. Large, soft pretzels with dark mustard. Coppa and other luncheon meats. Cornichons. Would even be a nice accompaniment to main courses like Rouladen.”

Appearance:  “Exactly what I want in a beer.”

Aroma:  “There's a distinctive aroma. I can tell it's Sapporo.”

Taste:  “I like all the Asian beers—Kirin, Asahi, Singha . . . they're all superior to domestic lagers, but I like Sapporo the best."
