Laurelwood Fresh Hop Free Range Red Picmonkey

Fresh Hop Free Range Red

Laurelwood Brewing Co.

Portland, Oregon

Style: Red Ale

Alcohol: 6.1%

IBUs: 69

Serving Style: Bottles and kegs (our sample from draft)

Availability: Throughout the Northwest, also Alaska and Pennsylvania

Appearance:   “Like a cloudy amber-orange color.”

Aroma:   “There’s really not much aroma. I can’t pick up any definable smell.”

Taste:   “A nice mildly hoppy flavor. It’s well-balanced. The flavor lasts through the swallow, from front-to-back. Laurelwood does their regular Free Range Red, but this one is slightly different. The (addition of) fresh hops adds just a little bit of bitterness, which gives this a really nice flavor. People who don’t like the sometimes overwhelming hoppiness of an IPA might find this a good alternative.”

Food Affinity:   “Food with some flavor or spice would be best, but you can drink it with whatever you want to eat. It doesn’t really matter

Ruhstaller 1881 Picmonkey 2

1881 California Red Ale

Sacramento, California

Style: American red ale

Alcohol: 5.6%

IBUs: 35

Serving Style: Cans, bottles, keg (our sample from draft)

Availability: Year-around in much of California and a few other states.

Appearance:  “Dark coppery shade. Almost mahogany colored. Ivory head.”

Aroma:  “Sweet and malty. Somewhat floral.”

Taste:  “Hops are there, but malt predominates. Heavy caramel and toffee presence. There's a fullness, a richness that seems to make this a better choice for fall drinking than as a summer quaff.”

Food Affinity:  “We enjoyed this beer at Roxy in Sacramento with a beef rib appetizer served with sauce incorporating the 1881. We think the beer would also do well if paired with home-made chili or beef stew.”
