“In spite of its French-sounding name, this week’s wine ‘Pick’ comes from some very good red wine country on California’s Central Coast. Écluse is actually the French equivalent of the surname of the owners of Écluse Wines & Lock Vineyard, Steve and Pam Lock.

“The Écluse 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big wine, full of dark fruit aspects. We find these reminiscent of currants, blackberries and black cherries. There’s also a background that we think hints of subtle spices and roasted coffee. There is a richness and a smooth, almost viscous, feeling in the mouth that becomes more prominent as the wine opens up in the glass. While very easy to drink now, we believe this wine—still relatively young—will likely show more complexity with a few more years in the bottle.

Food Affinity:   “With any red meat, of course, but the coffee-like component would be very nice with the piquancy of a high quality smoked pork chop or slowly-simmered beef short ribs. Or try Portobello mushrooms, thickly sliced and marinated in a vinaigrette for 45-minutes, then grilled over charcoal (a meatless filet mignon).”
