DCV 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Picmonkey

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Dry Creek Vineyard

Dry Creek Valley

Alcohol: 14.5%

Suggested Retail: $ 26

“Though better known for Zinfandel, Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley continues to evolve as a place to grow good Cabernet Sauvignon. Dry Creek Vineyard, a winery which uses grapes mostly from the Dry Creek Valley in which is situated, has produced a wine from the 2013 vintage which has complexities of many Bordeaux wines, while still exhibiting a lot of traditional California power. The wine is comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes native to Bordeaux (7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec).

“Deep blackberry and currant aromas show from the first pour. There’s also some anise to the nose and, we thought, some wisps of rosemary. In the mouth, it’s full and rich, yet not too big or powerful (sometimes “more” isn’t necessarily better. Restraint has its place in this world, especially with wine.) The Dry Creek Vineyard 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon should please American fans of big red wines, while maybe introducing them to nuances they’ve not always noticed. At $26 full retail, it’s good value in this era.”

Food Affinity: “We’d suggest a good quality beef roast, rubbed with garlic, herbs and salt & pepper, then cooked very slowly to medium-rare and served with green beans and creamy mashed potatoes.”
