2016 Sauvignon Blanc

Spottswoode Est. Vnyd & Winery

Napa Valley (40%)/Sonoma Mtn (60%)

Alcohol: 14.2%

Suggested Retail: $38

“How often do you pay $38 for Sauvignon Blanc?

“Seldom is this varietal priced at parity with the ubiquitous Chardonnay, but there’s no reason it shouldn’t be if the quality is there. Spottswoode’s Sauvignon Blanc is expensive (about the same price as Rombauer’s Carneros Chardonnay), but it really stood out in a recent tasting.

”Of course, the requisite flavor profile of Sauvignon Blanc was evident, but it was wrapped in a sophisticated package that elevated the whole tasting experience. We found delicate stone fruit reminiscent of white peaches and nectarines, but also a creamy lemon quality. These were presented in a wine showing not just disparate elements, but a sophisticated elevation of this too often under-appreciated grape. The whole really was greater than just the sum of its parts.”

Food Affinity: “You could just enjoy a glass of the Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc on its own, but a wine this good almost challenges you to pair it with something special. An elegant dip of warm Dungeness crab comes to mind. Maybe some of the really big scallops in a buerre blanc?”
