Toad Hollow Cab S Picmonkey

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Toad Hollow Vineyards

Alcohol: 13.9%

Suggested Retail: $ 16.99

“Toad Hollow is based in Healdsburg in Sonoma County, but has sourced the grapes for this wine from the Clements Hills section of the Lodi AVA. Long respected for its Zinfandel, the Lodi appellation is also becoming a solid growing area for other varieties, too. If it can’t produce Cabernet Sauvignon of the same quality as the best North Coast vineyards, it can deliver grapes that allow wineries to turn out solid versions of this wine variety at an affordable price.

“We found the Toad Hollow 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon intriguing. Unlike some of the big and alcoholic Lodi Cabs that admittedly are big sellers, this wine leans toward a lighter and more elegant personality. Fairly aromatic, it shows a cedary nose before opening up to tastes of dark cherry and plum. Somewhat soft and a tad sweetish to our taste, there’s some subtle spice in the background, too. A bit unusual stylistically, the Toad Hollow Cabernet isn’t a blockbuster of a wine, but does show that this grape variety can produce a distinctive wine at modest cost.”

Food Affinity:   “We’re thinking of something with a bit of spice would complement the Toad Hollow Cabernet personality. Some grilled merguez sausages would be fun. Cassoulet—if you have time to make it—would be another option as we get into this fall weather.”
