Montevina 2013 Barbera Picmonkey

2015 Barbera

Amador County

Alcohol: 13.5%

Suggested Retail: $12

“The Barbera grape is native to Italy’s Piedmont region. It’s also grown in many other parts of the world and used to be known for produing a lot of tons per acre in California’s Central Valley. In that milieu it made wine, alright, but the results weren’t very tasty.

“In the last couple of decades many consumers have become fans of this variety and for good reason—wineries are learning how to deal with this grape and the results are very satisfying. Montevina has been a Barbera pioneer. This Amador County winery began working with Barbera in the early 1970s. Their early vintages were a revelation to many in the wine business, even to Italians who were quite familiar with the way they thought Barbera should taste. Hallmark of this grape variety is its low tannin and high acid flavor profile, which makes it easy to drink, as well as being a very good companion to food.

“We found the 2015 Amador County Barbera from Montevina showed a lot of cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors, as well as a bit more substance and complexity than a wine at this price would ordinarily exhibit.”

Food Affinity: “Barbera is a great complement to Italian foods prepared with tomatoes or tomato sauces because of its good acidity. However, your Taste reviewer enjoyed this bottle from Montevina with a rib-eye steak, grilled medium-rare. It might not have been that classic Italian preparation of Bisteca Fiorentina, but he thought it was an outstanding pairing.”
