Gallo and Boisset Honored

TASTE News Service, February 22, 2017 – Gina Gallo, Senior Director of Winemaking of the Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery, and her husband Jean-Charles Boisset, Proprietor of the Boisset Collection, will be awarded the Robert Mondavi Wine & Food award by The Collins College of Hospitality Management for their contributions to the wine world and hospitality industry.

“Rosanna is a sparkling wine produced from a partnership of the Collins College of Hospitality Management and College of Agriculture of Cal Poly Pomona and South Coast Winery in Temecula.

The name Rossana is a reference to an Arabian mare owned by W.K. Kellogg, whose horse ranch of yesteryear is now home to Cal Poly Pomona in southern California. The Horsehill Vineyards identity is an obvious reference to the legacy of the land.

There's also a history to the vines that supplied the fruit for Rossana. The Horsehill Vineyards Zinfandel is the product of cuttings taken from very old vines on the De Ambrogio Ranch in nearby Rancho Cucamonga, an area with a history of producing high quality winegrapes before it finally fell prey to the pressure of development. The website of the Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch indicates the wine is available at $15 a bottle. It's also on the list at the Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch (open during the school year only) for $30.

“Rossana's color is relatively deep for a rosé. The wine shows assertive qualities of strawberries and cherries. We'd like to see more Zinfandel-based sparklers like this. It's neither complex nor sophisticated, but Rossana is a respectable choice in a modestly priced sparkling wine. Though produced in very limited quantities, its presence in the marketplace offers consumers a stylistic option and honors history. Proceeds from this wine support a culinary garden located near the student-managed and operated Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch.”

Food affinity: “Sparkling wines aren't just for celebrations. Most are more food-friendly than people realize. We'd happily drink this one with almost anything on a brunch buffet and would like it with grilled sausages at a late summer barbecue.”
