“This week’s Wine ‘Pick’ is a high-quality sparkler at a reasonable price. This non-vintage Italian wine is not Champagne (that being a name for sparkling wines made in that particular part of France), but it’s made of 100% Chardonnay grapes in the same metodo classico or classical manner of Champagne’s winemaking tradition. The Ferrari firm was established in the Trentino Alto Adige growing region in northern Italy near the Swiss and Austrian borders in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari and has been run for many years by the Lunelli family.

“The Ferrari Brut Trentadoc opens with aromas and flavors of lemon and white peach. There’s a log-lasting effervescence with just a slight creaminess in the mid-palate. We like the Champagne-like yeastiness that is balanced by a bracing zesty acidity. Finishes with clean and crisp finale.”

Food affinity: “Would be excellent appetizer wine with thinly-sliced dry Italian ham such as speck or culatello, dry cheeses and salted blanched almonds. As a main course accompaniment, it would complement many white fish dishes and maybe even lighter treatments of veal.”
