It's sometimes hard to remember how you've managed to lose touch with Old Friends.

Old Friends can come in many forms.  For example, a wine tasting visit to the Napa valley, a meal at a Michelin Star rated restaurant, a round or two of golf at a venue strong enough to host PGA Tour events, and the opportunity to view a PGA Tournament up close and personal all fall into the Old Friends category for this correspondent.

This year's Safeway Open, a PGA golf tournament being presented by Chevron, will be held September 25-29 at the 36-hole Silverado Resort and Spa in the heart of the Napa valley.

French Ly chef Thos KellerThomas Keller takes time away from his kitchen at Three Michelin Starred French Laundry to help with food at Safeway Open Almost four million tourists visited the Napa Valley last year.  One of the principal attractions for many of them was the opportunity to taste some of the finest wine from one of the best known wine growing region in the Western Hemisphere, the Napa and Sonoma valleys.  While some may argue that these are two (or more) separate regions, for many of us they remain as one premiere area for the growing of grapes and the production of fine wine.  Incidentally, when was the last time you visited this region to enjoy the tasting of your favorite beverage from one of the many world reknown wineries located there?

Nestled in the heart of the Napa Valley is the Silverado Resort and Spa which once again this year will host this prestigious professional golf tournament featuring some of the best golfers in the world.  Over the years countless visitors have viewed professional and amateur golf tournaments held over these thirty six holes of championship golf.  When was the last time you attended and viewed a first class PGA golf tournament?

Hundreds of thousands of visitors have stayed at the Silverado Resort and Spa. The amenities available include golf on its friendly but challenging courses, being pampered in the Spa, and especially, savoring the fine dining in its eateries.  If you have never had the pleasure of spending some time here, now might be a great opportunity to do so.

A visit to this area also affords the opportunity to enjoy one or more of the many famous eating establishments in the Napa-Sonoma area.  Can you say Michelin stars?

Two years ago this area of Northern California suffered untold wild fire ravages.  A view from the fairways at the Silverado Resort and Spa still shows continued rebuilding of homes that were destroyed by those fires.  Wineries and vineyards in the region were lost and we came very close to losing many of these Old Friends.

It is sad to realize that it's been way too long since many of us have had the pleasure of spending time with each of these Old Friends.

If you are in or visiting Northern California in late September, be sure to enjoy the opportunity to taste the finest wines, to enjoy the ultimate level of the culinary arts, and to view the best golfers competing at golf's highest level while these Old Friends are still available.
