My Experience Dining at the Deck

I’ve had a couple of meals at The Deck. My first visit was in April, 2021 when it was really packed. They’ve got this rule where you can’t call ahead to reserve a table—you’ve got to show up in person and get your name on the list.

I waited for two hours, which turned into two and a half by the time we sat down. There are stairs on both sides of the restaurant to go down to the beach.

My boyfriend and I were walking on the beach to kill time. I was pretty hungry by then and kicking myself for not getting there early enough to watch the sunset while eating.

We managed to get seated when it was already dark. Started with some SoCal mules and a cheese and charcuterie board.

The staff were great, especially considering I’ve got food allergies—they even got the manager to make sure everything was safe for me, which I liked. I had a steak and it was delicious, especially the mashed potatoes. My boyfriend had salmon and he was satisfied with it as well.

I went back again yesterday (November, 2023) so it was much quieter, only about a 20-minute wait for a table with an ocean view. We didn’t bother waiting and just sat in the middle. I tried this cocktail called ‘Liquid Vacation’ which was sweet and fruity. My boyfriend had the New York steak this time and I tried the lamb chops.

The lamb chops ended up being too raw for me. I had to ask them to cook them more. Not sure if they were supposed to be served that way, the waiter never asked how I wanted them cooked.

After they cooked them more, my lamb chops tasted quite good. But between the two, I’d go for the steak next time.

Service was alright, not as top-notch as my first visit. It was a bit chilly sitting outside without heaters, and I’m not sure why they didn’t have any, seeing as it’s November. Last time we were there in April and the heaters were up to keep us warm.

The outdoor seating is somewhat limited, and while there’s additional space to the left, it appears to be reserved mainly for larger groups or events, which explains the wait times.

The place has a nice vibe with its combination of cuisine, mesmerizing views, and an atmosphere that’s both chic and relaxed.

It’s a walking distance from the main beach. However, after a huge hearty meal, I found the uphill walk leaving the restaurant like climbing Mount Everest on a full stomach! Overall, I’d say it’s definitely worth a visit.
